Mortar Board is…
- an organization governed by students for over 100 years
- in intergenerational group of leaders, chosen for their achievements, united for local and national philanthropy
- a national network of honor societies committed to scholarship, leadership, and service
- the first national honor society started by women students for women students
- dedicated men and women who promote equal opportunities among all people and emphasize the forward progression of the status of women
- home to thousands of alumni who are dedicated to the goals of the society, committed to its future, and proud to serve the next generation of Mortar Boarders

- Opportunities to meet and work with accomplished students from a multitude of disciplines and age groups
- Opportunities for career placement and advancement through contacts with Mortar Board alumni
- Opportunities to be considered for a local Mortar Board scholarship that is awarded annually to an outstanding member(s) of the Jane K. Smith Cap and Gown Chapter
- Opportunities to apply for National Mortar Board Fellowships

Local Chapter Activities
Members of Mortar Board work together to play an active role in leadership and service on campus and in the community. Currently, the Jane K. Smith Cap and Gown Chapter engages in several activities:
- Sponsor a dinner to honor outstanding SDSU faculty and staff
- In cooperation with Aztec Shops, produce a Daily Planner and Calendar of Events
- Serve as mentors to students at San Diego State University
- Participate in special projects related to learning and academic excellence
